Five things Friday: Getting strong, crappy runs and my new home office!

five thingsHappy almost Saturday, friends! And happy April Fool’s, I suppose?

I was hoping to post more this week, but with moving and unpacking and freelance work taking up the majority of my “free” time right now, I just haven’t felt motivated to sit down and write. I still don’t, so I’m going to make this short and sweet ๐Ÿ™‚

1. I’m starting to get some upper body strength/definition back thanks to my new strength training program. I’ve been pretty consistent with it since I got back from vacation in early March, and will continue it for another month until I mix up the reps, sets and weight a bit.

2. I’ve only done a handful of 5 km runs since the marathon, and they’ve been pretty sloggy — I can tell it’s time to go running shoe shopping (I’m way overdue as I’ve run two marathons in this pair that I’ve had since October). It also doesn’t help that pollen is literally coating EVERYTHING in sight right now and I’m having a hard time breathing outside. The only good things about my runs lately are that it’s light out enough after work to hit the trails, the weather has been beautiful and I’m treated to scenery like this: (more…)

Five Things Friday – Magazine articles, moving and muscles

I have random pieces of news to share that you may or may not be interested in, so what better way put it out there than with a Five Things Friday post?

  1. My profile is finally up on Get Out There Magazine’s website, so all (50? 60?) of my articles are linked at last. I’ve been writing for them on a regular basis since 2015, from general fitness articles to web promotions to content for other event sites they manage. Even though it takes up a good chunk of my time, writing consistently helps to keep my skills sharp and builds my writing resume. Plus, it’s fun to research Canadian-based endurance events and activities, such as wine runs, food runs and naked yoga classes, haha.

How I’m changing up my fitness routine for fall

In three weeks I’ll be running 28 km of rock and root-covered trails with 4,000 feet of vertical for the Finlayson Arm 50. But I’ve barely been out of the trails lately, let alone done much running. My last long trail run was about a month ago when I did 23 km. Then I took a week of vacation. Then got sick. Then helped Matt move. I did manage to go for aย  2.5 hour hike this Sunday… but now I’m sick again. Ugh.

This weekend will be our longest run, where we’re actually going to run the entire race course. I’m going to do it, but it’s not going to be pretty. Although this race was just supposed to be something fun for me to do with my running buddies and to keep me moving and motivated during the summer, I’m looking forward to changing up my fitness routine for fall to something more manageable. Especially considering both my personal training business and freelance writing have picked up considerably these last few weeks, which is awesome, but makes hitting the trails for 3+ hours on the weekend a bit tricky. Squamish 50k Race Recap: The toughest race I’ve ever done

Wellโ€ฆ that was an experience.

I think the more challenging moments of the Squamish 50 are still lingering, as Iโ€™ve yet to look back and reminisce about the beautiful mountain views, camaraderie of the other trail runners I encountered in those 11 grueling hours, and amazement that I actually finished the race relatively unscathed.

Iโ€™m pretty sure the first thing out of my mouth when I crossed the finish line was Iโ€™m never doing that again.

It was close to 30 degrees on Friday when my boyfriend and I arrived in Squamish, set up our campsite at Alice Lake and picked up my race package at the sponsor hotel. When I checked in, they gave me the option of an earlier start, which I took, thinking itโ€™d be better to start when it was cooler in the day. Iโ€™m extremely glad I did start earlier, as I might not have made the cut-off time of 12 hours if I didnโ€™t. (more…)

Squamish 50: How I trained for my first ultra

Then I’ll be spending about eight hours runking (running the flat trails and downhills, hiking the uphills… it’s my word of the day, just made it up) up and down this and in this.

Hopefully this will be me at the end. But I’ll most probably end up finishing like this, if I finish at all, that is, considering how many times I’ve eaten dirt (or come close to) on my long trail runs lately; I tend to stop picking up my feet after 5+ hours of running single-track forest trails and stumble over every rock and root in my path.

Naw, I’m pretty excited to race Squamish 50 this weekend, and feel confident I can at least finish. Since this is my first ultra, I don’t have a time goal in mind and have no idea what to expect. My goal is just to finish, relatively unscathed. (more…)
