{friday favourites} My favourite health & fitness reads and discoveries from the web this week

Life In LeggingsHappy Friday, friends! I’m linking up with the lovely Heather of Life in Leggings today to share a few of my favourite health and fitness reads and discoveries from the web this week.

How to Fit in Strength Training and Marathon Training – Cowgirl Runs
Although this is a guest post I wrote for Ange, I love her added commentary! Not only is she a fellow marathoner, blogger and Canadian, she’s also an e-friend (since we haven’t met IRL but will in October when she comes to run the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon) and client!

Fueling The Vegetarian Endurance Athlete – Part 1Girls Gone Strong
A great run-down of how much carbs, fats and protein you should be eating if you’re a vegetarian endurance athlete, plus the best plant-based sources of protein, iron and vitamin B.

This guy is attempting to do 50 Ironmans in 50 states in 50 days – Iron Cowboy
Yes, you read that right. This Calgary native is attempting to complete 50 Ironmans — that’s a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile marathon (42.2 km) run — in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. INSANE. His first leg kicks off in June in Hawaii, and finishes in Utah in late July. You can join him for the last 5 K in each state as part of a charity run, which I would totally do if I happened to be in the US. Do you think he’ll make it?

5 Things You Can Do To Be A Better Runner Right Now – Reach Your Peak
These are all things I know I should be doing, but I’m lucky if I do one out of the five any given week. During training I’m pretty good about doing single-leg work, hip openers and strides, but find it hard to fit in yoga.

The Science Behind the Midnight Snack – Be Truly Nourished
A interesting read about why we may crave a little something before bed. I’m usually hungry before bed, but that’s because I eat at 5 p.m.!

How Eating Better Can Make You Happier – Examine
Lacking certain essential minerals can definitely affect your mood. Zinc and magnesium are two essential minerals known to improve your mood — which is why eating dark chocolate (high in magnesium) can make you happy!

Is Metabolic Damage A Real Thing? – Girls Gone Strong
A super interesting read. When you mess around with your diet, sleep and exercise, it can certainly have an affect on your body and can cause it to store fat. And you may need to do the opposite of what you’ve been lead to believe (such as working out less and eating more instead of eating less and working out harder) to bring yourself back into balance.

Allergies And Outdoor Exercise – Organic Runner Mom
I’m lucky in that I don’t have seasonal allergies that keep me inside instead of outside enjoying the almost-summer weather. If you are a runner with allergies, there are some great tips in this post about how to deal with the sniffles and stuffiness in the spring.

This new fitness and stress tracker for women – LEAF by BellaBeat
I think this popped up in my Facebook feed and I was totally drawn in by the cute leaf design. I gave up on fitness trackers earlier this year after I was getting too obessive about the numbers, but I really like the things this wearable tracks. Not only does it track sleep and activity, but also your breathing and your fertility. Yes, fertility. It has a monthly cycle tracker so you can understand how your time of the month affects your mood. I would also think this could be handy if you’re trying to conceive. Also, it’s something I’d actually wear — you can wear it as a clip, necklace or bracelet. Cute, right?

What are you loving this week? Do you think the Iron Cowboy will complete his mission? What do you think of that new fitness tracker?
