{Try This Thursday} NuZest Vegan Protein Powder

NuZest's Clean Lean Protein PowderToday I’m linking up with Jess from Hello to Fit and Ivanna from Petite Heartbeat for Try This Thursday to share my thoughts on NuZest USA’s Clean Lean Protein Powder!

NuZest sent me a few sample flavours of their Clean Lean Protein powder to try last week, but since I decided I was going to run a marathon at the last minute, my focus was on eating as much carby goodness as I could in the few days leading up to the race — I didn’t get around to trying them until now since they’re actually quite low in carbs.

Like Everlast and Vega, NuZest also uses pea protein powder as it’s main ingredient. I prefer pea protein  because I find it’s easy to digest, plus it generally tastes better and has a better texture than soy or rice protein. Though I don’t necessarily recommend protein powder supplements, I find it’s the easiest way for me to get in an ample amount of non-animal protein to help meet my muscle-building goals. Plus, they’re yummy and convenient.

Aside from 100% pea protein isolate and natural flavours, such as strawberry, cocoa powder and vanilla, Clean Lean Protein contains all nine essential amino acids so it’s a complete protein source. The nutritional info per serving is around 90 calories, 20 grams of protein, 0.4 grams of fat, 1 gram of carbohydrate, and less than a gram of sugar, fibre and sodium, which is an especially appealing nutritional profile if you’re a vegan looking to build muscle and drop body fat.

I tried the strawberry flavour blended in a shaker cup with just almond milk, the chocolate as a banana “ice cream” and the vanilla as a smoothie.

Wild Strawberry MIx
nuzest strawberyy smoothieThis blended up easily in just a shaker cup and was really yummy. It wasn’t too sweet, and the flavour was actually quite subtle.

  • One serving NuZest WIld Strawberry Lean Clean Protein Powder
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • bit of water

Blend in a shaker until powder is dissolved.

Chocolate Peanut Butter “Ice Cream”
chocolate peanut butter banana nice creamThis was exceptionally good. The chocolate protein powder blended up nicely and tasted really good in this “ice cream” that I usually just make with cocoa powder.

  • 1 large frozen banana, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 serving NuZest Rich Chocolate Clean Lean Protein Powder
  • 2 tbsp of coconut or almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter

Add all ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth.

Pomegranate Raspberry Smoothie
Loved the vanilla flavour mixed into this smoothie. This would also be a good combo for a banana “ice cream”.

  • 1/3 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1 cup rasberries
  • 1 serving NuZest Smooth Vanilla Clean Lean Protein Powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

Overall, I loved the flavours, taste and texture of NuZest vegan protein powder. If you’re looking for a good non-dairy, low-carb, low-fat, high-protein blend, NuZest is a great option. I still prefer Everlast’s vanilla protein powder for overall vanilla-y taste, and love Vega’s nutritional shakes when it comes to flavour options, taste and nutritional profile. As someone who can’t have dairy, I LOVE all the vegan protein powder options available now that aren’t loaded with sugar and don’t have the texture of coffee grounds.

Have you tried NuZest? Do you use nutritional supplements such as protein powders, bars or gels? What are your favourite kinds? Also, if you have a yummy recipe I could try with these protein powder flavours, please share below!
